Just reread Oliver Twist. Fagin, Bill Sikes, refer to their hideouts as cribs.

Correct me if I’m wrong—didn’t Lester Young also refer to Caucasians as “The Grays”? It’s yet another thing I love about him.

I've never heard that one, but I wouldn't doubt it. When he complimented Stan Getz's playing early in Getz's career, Getz said all Young did was walk up to him after he played a solo in a club and say, "Nice eyes." Getz had to ask around to figure out it meant Young thought he played well!
