If nothing else, this article made me realize that I don't have a copy of Sail Away saved on my phone. I'm pretty sure I have a CD of it lying around somewhere. If not, I'll order a copy this evening.
I love that, too. I also like that she messes up the lyrics at one point and they leave it in because she's going so strong! For some reason, I get a kick out of botched lyrics being left in a recording, or singers chuckling when they shouldn't. Dylan does it a lot. Once it's recorded, it's recorded. No call for a second take.
Thanks for writing "The Cool Stuff" and saying what I wish I could about the things I love so much. Thrilling and heartbreaking about your meeting at Tower Records. His work is so important to me. Thank you, Paul. Here's my favorite paragraph (among the many delicious): "Newman manages to mix dark irreverence into even the most gorgeous settings, a neat trick that few other performers have ever been able to duplicate. It’s such a dangerous high-wire act, few have even tried."

Love the Tower Records story! So appropriate.
And my favorite Randy Newman COVER is Etta James’ version of “God’s Song.” The way she CACKLES singing the lyrics are a different level of darkness.

I would LOVE to know he read this.
Turns out that isn't easy to find as a new CD. Or vinyl for that matter. But Amazon had this, so I'll call it a win. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005JS7VQO/ref=sspa_dk_detail_4?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B005JS7VQO&pd_rd_w=Y35x1&content-id=amzn1.sym.953c7d66-4120-4d22-a777-f19dbfa69309&pf_rd_p=953c7d66-4120-4d22-a777-f19dbfa69309&pf_rd_r=TY1CZ2K3KZHKF32ENSZX&pd_rd_wg=PjqU1&pd_rd_r=d4d2c0b2-10fb-4829-b6eb-118a9027ae32&s=music&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9kZXRhaWwy
